Tribute to Trixie - The whale shark at the Georgia aquarium
On November 27, 2020, something really bad happened. We lost a huge contributor to our understanding of sharks. We lost a huge shark attraction that got many people to love sharks. We lost Trixie, the biggest female whale shark at the Georgia Aquarium. Trixie was a 32 foot whale shark that has been at the aquarium for about 15 years. The aquarium said that Trixie “was having difficulty navigating the habitat earlier in the day and then her health rapidly declined.” (see this link for more info). I for one am very sad about this, because last year (for my 13th birthday) my family and I planned to go to Georgia and swim with the sharks there, but obviously, because of COVID-19, things changed. I really wanted to swim with all of the whale sharks there, and I’m disappointed that I won’t have a chance to meet Trixie.
However, even though she died, and I am very sad, she lived a very good life. She was fed well, and she helped enormously in whale shark research and shark research in general.
